From Wall Street To Your Street; Former Goldman Sachs VP Becomes Franchisee With # 1 Home Inspection Company

“Wall Street was an amazing ride,” reflects former Goldman Sachs VP, Elton Andrews. Along with his 25-year run at Goldman Sachs, Andrews spent an impressive 32 years total in the financial sector. Facing possible retirement, Andrews took some time off to be with his family, but it wasn’t long before he began searching for a new project.

“I loved what I did for those 32 years and I experienced many areas of the business,” said Andrews. “From my beginning in operations, managing a trading desk, becoming involved in the development and growth of the electronic trading marketplace, I interacted with some of the most brilliant people in the industry. They really had an impact on my life! I was mentored by some of the best, and then I had opportunities to mentor others. That work/life experience was priceless, and will be with me in everything I do in the future.”

And that future is here. “I developed a very strong desire to start my own business,” he said. “I saw the Pillar To Post Home Inspectors model, and I was intrigued.”

Pillar To Post Home Inspectors is the brand to which more than three million families have turned to for 25 years to be their trusted advisor when buying or selling a home. Consistently ranked as the top-rated home inspection company on Entrepreneur Magazine’s annual Franchise500®, they are enjoying their 19th year in a row on that list.

“I saw Pillar To Post Home Inspectors as a total change of direction, but in a market that still somewhat related to finance, so it seemed a natural fit for me,” Andrews explained. “In my previous career, attention to detail, people management, building the client experience, and the needs of the client were all part of my daily focus. I will manage my Pillar to Post Home Inspectors business with the same mindset and dedication.”

A professional evaluation both inside and outside the home is at the core of Pillar To Post Home Inspectors’ service. Pillar To Post Home Inspectors input data and digital photos into a computerized report that is printed and presented on site. All is provided to clients in a customized binder for easy reference, allowing homebuyers or sellers to make confident, informed decisions.

Spencer Velez knows how to use his expertise and skills. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps for 14 years. The now 35-year-old deployed to Afghanistan in 2011 as a part of Operation Enduring Freedom and was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal for superior performance of duties while serving in a direct combat service support role.

As if those achievements weren’t enough, Velez then completed graduate school at the University of Southern California (USC) earning a Master of Business for Veterans (MBV) degree in a program designed to leverage the management and leadership experience gained during military service.

While attending graduate school, he applied these skills to his role in Corporate Compliance with The Walt Disney Company. In that role, he ensured wherever Disney products were manufactured, the workers were provided a safe and inclusive environment.

Rare Earthquake Hits Close To Our Alaska Franchisees

Last Friday there was a 7.0 earthquake in Anchorage, Alaska but luckily our franchisees, Jamie Brough and Bob Vautour and families had no injuries and they are doing fine. Regional Director Melissa Schmitt reported that they made it though a good minute or so of strong shaking and deafening noise plus having more aftershocks and one registering a 5.8 on the Richter Scale.

Bob and Jamie are now back out in the area doing inspections and helping their communities get back on track. With the aftermath of the earthquake, there were calls to their businesses to inspect properties where homeowners were concerned about potential damage.

Jared Fenn Franchise Celebrates 15 Years In Business

Congratulations to Jared Fenn of Orem, UT who has been a franchise partner for 12 years, but as a transfer, his Pillar To Post franchise has been in operation for 15 years. Jared said from day one he wanted to run his own business and when there was an opportunity to buy the business he seized it. One of the early things he learned was that “relationships are 40% of the business.” Early on, his realtor visits consisted of 35 offices which he delivered homebaked cookies every other week.

These days, Jared has three inspectors working for him and he takes pride in delivering a high standard of brand experience to customers with consistent reports and customer service. “If all of our team members went on different days to the same client they would get the same consistent quality from us,” he says. “For me, one-third is providing a good inspection, one-third is reporting and the other one-third is your presentation to the client. You have to carry these parts equally and be careful with your words so you don’t scare your clients.”

Every home has a fix he says, recalling that he talked his brother into buying a former meth house because the value of the house and property was high compared to the price of fixing the home. “It’s important for the clients to know what the problems are up front and the significance of the issues – then they can see what is right for them.”

The cookies have been replaced with chocolate truffles and these days Jared is doing more Continuing Education classes with agents which is a big part of his marketing. As a State Certified CE instructor, he gives out about 500-700 CE credits to agents each year. This is a great foot in the door for new agents and offices.”

She has been further inspired by a friend who left a top company, bought a franchise and is encouraging to find her fit. Other friends and family, knowing her great networking skills were pushing her towards real estate sales, but that didn’t feel like a good fit to her, home inspection does. She loves what she calls our “business in a box”.

Stephen Shelowitz, FL Launches His Business

Congratulations to Stephen Shelowitz of Palm Beach for launching his business. Stephen has been in the residential and commercial flooring business for 33 years and currently owns and manages a flooring store in NY. He is closing the store, selling his home and moving with his family, wife Andrea a nurse and 3 children, to Florida for a better lifestyle. He has always been interested in home inspection, having worked in the construction sector for the last 40 years and loves our brand experience and systems.

How to Transition From Another Career into a Home Inspection Franchise

Many of our franchises come from careers outside the home inspection industry, with no prior direct experience. However, what’s often overlooked is that experience in other industries can often prove valuable when transitioning to franchise ownership. We understand that many potential franchisees might be wary of jumping into a home inspection franchise with little industry or franchise experience, but Pillar To Post has a track record of turning ambitious, passionate entrepreneurs into successful home inspection franchisees.

Steven Peterson

One of our franchisees, Steve Peterson, worked for 19 years in the post-secondary educational institution field. He began to realize, however, that it might be a smart career move to make a change. “Shrinking enrollment and governmental regulations,” he says, “made it harder on educational institutions to meet budget numbers.” Peterson was offered a buyout, and he took it, eager to open a new chapter in his career. He decided that this was the “perfect opportunity to get back to my roots, as I grew up working for a family-owned construction business, and I am excited to get back into the industry.”

While it might not seem like a career in post-secondary education is relevant to a home inspection franchise, Peterson’s relationship-building skills align perfectly with what makes Pillar To Post uniquely stalwart in its industry. Franchisees need to be able to connect with realtors, homebuyers, and sellers, and utilize exceptional communication skills to deliver concise, well-written reports.

Robert Williams

Robert Williams is another one of our franchisees who made the successful transition to a home inspection franchise. Before joining the Pillar To Post family, Robert was a financial services consultant, but looking to build a business of his own. Robert is thankful that Pillar To Post gave him “the opportunity to work for myself and to interact with clients face-to-face, versus sitting at a desk all day.” He is incredibly enthusiastic about being able to “meet, greet, and help people with their futures. Home inspection is part of a big step in a person’s future.”

The relationship-building skills learned in the financial services industry make Robert a prime candidate for a home inspection franchise. He was also excited to be able to use his new career to help families in need. In August 2017, he spent more than two months utilizing his home inspection training to assist 175 families affected by Hurricane Harvey in the Houston area through FEMA. He says, “By assessing and reporting the storm’s damage to homes, I helped Texans get their claims processed and receive the needed relief as soon as possible.”

From Car Salesman to Property Inspector: How Our Franchisees Do It

While some of our franchisees do come from a home inspection background, the majority have a background unrelated to home inspections and come into the experience relatively inexperienced. We often find, however, that some of our best franchisees come from careers totally disparate from a property inspector business. That hasn’t slowed them down, though. Pillar To Post has a track record of turning ambitious, passionate entrepreneurs into successful home inspection franchisees. Imran Qillawala is a perfect example. An engineering and education student turned property inspector, we couldn’t be more excited to have him as one of the newest members of our team.

Imran Qillawala

Over 13 years ago when Imran Qillawala immigrated to the United States with his family from Pakistan, he only had a couple hundred dollars to his name. Now, he is the owner of the newest Pillar To Post franchise in Leesburg, Virginia. Qillawala’s educational background in engineering and business has set him up for success, helping him live his dream of being a business owner.

Leaving Pakistan was a difficult decision, as security was increasingly becoming a problem.  Qillawala had been personally attacked once, and the economy was struggling. He and his wife had two young daughters who they wanted to provide with the best life possible, so they decided to move to the United States.

Since Qillawala’s father-in-law was already a U.S. citizen, he was able to help the family of four obtain visas to enter the country. Upon his arrival, Qillawala started working in a Toyota dealership, which taught him a valuable lesson in how to interact with customers. “I learned a lot over there,” he said. “When you’re in the car industry, you learn to speak to people, to connect with people.”

After leaving Toyota, he moved on to Carmax for eight years and received managerial training before starting his own dealership in Winchester, Virginia. Owning a dealership, however, wasn’t the right fit for Qillawala, so he decided to sell it and embark upon his property inspector business. His decision? Open a Pillar To Post franchise in Leesburg because he valued the company’s process and their culture. He felt Pillar To Post treated employees at all levels properly, used up-to-date technology, and gave franchisees the benefit of the most streamlined processes. Qillawala was also excited by the opportunity to educate potential home owners and realtors of problems and how to fix them. The flexible work schedule also helps him spend more time with family.

As for the future, Qillawala hopes to make his Leesburg branch No. 1 in the Pillar To Post network. The branch opened in December, and he recognizes the challenge ahead of him, but says confidently, “I love challenges. I have done this before and I will do it again, one step at a time, one realtor at a time.”

We are excited to count Qillawala as one of our newest team members, and look forward to helping him making his property inspector franchise a success!

Why Young Entrepreneurs are a Perfect Fit for a Home Inspection Business Opportunity

Especially with younger franchisees, there is a great deal of uncertainty that comes with opening a franchise. It’s easy to get wrapped up in a cycle of doubt and procrastination, and never realize your potential as a business owner. As far as many entrepreneurs are concerned,  young adults are in a unique and enviable position; they may not have much experience in the business world, or the home inspection space, but they are hungry for new opportunities and to learn the ins and outs of a new industry. We’ve found that entering the home inspection industry at a young age can actually yield several benefits, so we’ve designed our home inspection business opportunity to be as accessible as possible for young entrepreneurs.

It’s The Perfect Time to Learn New Skills

Everyone knows its easiest to learn new skills and new systems for doing business at an early age, before we become too set in our ways.

There’s a lot to learn when you pursue a home inspection business opportunity, and franchisees who come from other industries and long careers can often find it difficult to adapt their existing skill set. We find that our young franchisees are always eager to learn a new industry, and are open to receiving advice and guidance.

A Great Support System

It’s important for any franchisee to take advantage of available support systems, and we have a team of over 30 people whose mission is to help franchisees grow their business. This is especially handy for young entrepreneurs who lack extensive business experience. We’ll pair you with a personal business coach, who will help you brainstorm ideas, solve problems, educate you about the industry, and guide you toward success. We understand that whatever your age, there’s always a learning curve, and we pride ourselves on giving you the support infrastructure to guide you through the rough patches.

Kalen Gelo

A resident of Winter Garden, Florida, 24-year-old Kalen Gelo made the big decision to pursue his dream of business ownership with a home inspection business opportunity. He has become one of our newest and youngest franchisees, and is looking forward to serving home buyers and sellers in Seminole and Orange County.

A lover of the outdoors, Gelo had been managing the outdoor department of a fishing and vacation resort when he decided to make the transition to the home inspection industry. In the past year, he read about the Pillar To Post opportunity and realized it was the right time to embark upon a new business venture. His intent is to turn it into a family business, which has already started with his mother, who plans to play an active role in the company from its inception.

“Growing up I learned many different trades including going to auto diesel school and cabin remodeling, which I really enjoyed,” Gelo said. “I thought it was time to put those skills to good use, and I always had a strong desire to work for myself. Pillar To Post, with its amazing reputation, was an easy choice after due diligence of franchises available. I saw and still see a great future with them.”

Gelo’s skills and expertise align perfectly with what makes Pillar To Post a premier home inspection business opportunity. We are excited to have him aboard, and look forward to helping him and other young franchisees fulfill their entrepreneurial dreams.

Why Pillar To Post is the Perfect Property Inspector Franchise for Families

The prospect of starting a new franchise can be scary and filled with uncertainties, but this process is often much smoother and less frightening when going into business with your family. Few things are more rewarding than starting a new business with a parent, child, or sibling, and at Pillar To Post, we understand that. That’s why we’ve made it easier than ever to start a property inspector franchise with your loved ones, and are continuously seeing more and more families take advantage of the opportunity. Brothers Tim and Joe Dingman have combined their impressive credentials to start their Pillar To Post franchise together, and would serve as an excellent example for franchisees aspiring to do the same.

The Dingman Brothers

When the Dingman Brothers launch their operations as franchise owners with Pillar To Post, they will serve homebuyers and sellers throughout Fairfield, Vacaville, Dixon, Benicia, Vallejo, American Canyon, Napa, Petaluma, Santa Rosa, Windsor, Cloverdale, Ukiah, Mendocino and Fort Bragg. The brothers are enthusiastic about their entrepreneurial prospects, claiming to be fulfilling a long-held dream.

“It was a lifelong goal of mine to own my own business and to work with my family one day,” Tim said. “This is the chance of a lifetime and I am blessed to be able to go down this path to make memories with my family.”

Tim, the younger Dingman brother, holds a civil engineering degree from New Mexico State and has worked as a project manager for the past 11 years for two of the largest general contractors in New Mexico. He oversaw more than $300 million worth of commercial construction projects, and is excited to transfer his experience shouldering heavy responsibility and large projects to his Pillar To Post property inspector business. Joe is a graduate of the United States Air Force Academy, and after over 20 years as a decorated pilot, retired in 2015. Joe flew combat sorties in both Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan, as well as earning a master’s degree in Public Policy from Georgetown University. When deciding on a base of operations for their property inspector franchise, the brothers chose Fairfield, California to be closer to their family.

Why Pillar To Post?

We could talk for hours about why Pillar To Post is a great property inspector franchise, but why not hear it from one of our valued franchisee families? On why he and his brother chose Pillar To Post, Joe Dingman says that they made the decision “for a few reasons”.

“It was the perfect family business for us to utilize our skills and get involved with the local community as business owners and leaders, while also allowing us to be a part of a quality brand and company that our family can grow with in the future.”

If you’re looking to start a family business, or even just looking to tackle it solo, a property inspector franchise with Pillar To Post could be the perfect opportunity for you. Contact us to learn more, or to get started today.

home inspection franchise pillar to post

Pillar To Post prides itself on having the respect of our franchisees, and we need that respect to continue to maintain a position of prominence in our industry. Because we value franchisee satisfaction so highly, we put a great deal of effort into developing our franchise system, and to instilling in our franchisees an understanding of our core values, and supporting them every step of the way. The outside recognition we have received for our franchise system, from Franchise Gator and others, validates our stellar support and training system, and proves that Pillar To Post is among the best home inspection franchise opportunities on the market.

The Importance of the Home Inspection Industry

Home inspection franchise opportunities are particularly solid investments, as they are in high demand across a wide range of homebuyers. Anyone who’s buying or selling a home needs a home inspector to ensure peace of mind, and that need is consistent no matter the age demographic or geographic region.

Most homes require regular maintenance of some kind, whether inside or outside the house, and prospective buyers always should be aware of the property’s needs. While there are a variety of home inspection franchise options, it’s important to recognize the differences between them, and what makes Pillar To Post unique. We could talk for hours about what makes Pillar to Post special, but we prefer to rely on our positive franchisee testimonies, and consistently high rankings from companies like Franchise Gator.

Franchise Gator’s Top 100

Franchise Gator recently released its annual Top 100 list for 2018, which ranks the top franchise systems considered to be solid investments. The list was compiled by evaluating hundreds of Franchise Disclosure Documents (FDD), focusing on unit growth, financial health, and franchisee satisfaction. We’re proud to announce that Pillar To Post has been ranked in the top 20 overall franchises, and was named the top home inspection franchise of 2018.

We are proud to be North America’s largest and fastest-growing professional home inspection franchise. What makes us unique is our hands-on, in-market training, making the opportunity accessible to anyone regardless of experiences.  Franchisees are also provided with a dedicated Start Up Director to guide them through the launch and operations for the first year of your business. We also have one of the lowest franchise fees and initial investments in the industry, making us one of the most affordable home inspection franchise options.
