Life rarely follows the straight path of a broad boulevard. For most it’s a narrow, winding trail with plenty of twists and turns. The adventure comes with embracing such a path and that’s just what Jeff Emmett has done as he launches a new career as an owner within the Pillar To Post Home Inspectors® network, the largest home inspection franchise in North America. The Evergreen, Colo., resident serves homebuyers and sellers throughout the metropolitan Denver area and surrounding mountain communities.
Jeff started his professional career in the financial services industry in Michigan, subsequently moved to Colorado and spent the last 15 years as an IT Project Manager in both the financial services and telecom industries. This might sound very different, but along the way there were plenty of “life moments” - both professionally and personally - taking place for Jeff.
When his last project management contract ended in late 2023, he decided to take some time off to study for a professional certification to help further his career in Project Management. But it wasn’t to be. “My heart wasn’t 100 percent in it anymore,” he said. “I became aware of the Pillar To Post opportunity and ultimately decided to bet on myself, start my own small business, and take advantage of the opportunity to turn my tenacity and hard work into more of a legacy for myself and my family.”
When the financial services company Jeff worked for exited the Denver market a few years ago, he and his wife, Tara, left the city for the idyllic mountain town of Evergreen – just 35 minutes west of Denver – but seemingly a world away with its sprawling alpine meadows and shaded canyons. “We moved into this beautiful little A-frame cabin deep in the woods, planning a more simple and peaceful life.”
That simple and peaceful life was interrupted when the couple surprisingly discovered that their family was about to increase by one. An unexpected joy! Their energetic son, who is now 5, has a great relationship with his loving adult sister, despite their big age difference.
While in Evergreen, Jeff and his family purchased the larger property next door and turned their original A-frame cabin into a VRBO rental. That successful experience as a small business owner was enough to whet Jeff’s appetite to explore other small business options. “That previous dip into entrepreneurship gave me a bit of the bug to investigate Pillar To Post when it came knocking,” Jeff said.
Jeff is a perfect fit for the 500-plus-locations chain and the business model affords him the opportunity to structure the business as he sees fit, whether hiring employees or doing it all himself. One thing is certain, Jeff couldn’t be more eager to launch the next chapter of his life as a small business owner.
“During my time as an IT Project Manager I had to be as efficient as possible in multi-tasking with tight timelines, I learned to communicate details clearly and succinctly, and be highly detail-oriented,” Jeff said. “I believe that professional experience will help me successfully run my own business and grow it.”
Skipping a home inspection can be costly. A survey from insurance firm Hippo found that most homeowners – 77 percent – had to pay for an unexpected repair within the first year of owning a house. During COVID and the subsequent housing boom, many buyers skipped contingencies like home inspections on contracts during the scramble to win the scarce homes available. Later this contributed to their remorse for spending too much money and rushing into buying.
“No one should skip a home inspection or be put in that situation ever again,” said Jeff. “I know that there are challenges in the real estate industry right now, primarily related to inventory and interest rates, but there are still an incredible number of properties for sale in the U.S.”
